In need of a break? Carmel-by-the-Sea, California is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. Nestled on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula, this quaint town is a treasure trove of stunning landscapes, charming architecture, and comforting lodgings. I’ve had the pleasure of exploring this delightful town on numerous occasions, and I must say, it’s the ideal spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Allow me to share my top picks for places to stay and things to do while you’re there.
Hotels You’ll Love in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel is home to a range of wonderful accommodations that cater to all tastes and preferences. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
For fans of vintage chic, Le Petit Pali at Ocean Ave is a must-see. This enchanting boutique hotel offers 35 beautifully decorated rooms that radiate warmth and comfort. It has a cozy, welcoming feel that reminds me of the hotels in “Gilmore Girls”. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of coffee on their cute patio or relaxing in your room, you’ll feel right at home.
If you value comfort above all else, Carmel Mission Inn is one of the coziest hotels I’ve had the pleasure to stay in. The beds are so soft, you’ll struggle to get up in the morning! This hotel is also very kid-friendly, making it an excellent choice for family trips. And with a restaurant and bar on the premises, you needn’t go far for a tasty meal. Just be prepared for the constant hum of a fan, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Although technically not in Carmel, Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is close enough to make my list. This Forbes 4-star hotel is where luxury meets convenience. The staff is always attentive, and the spa is a must-visit. If you’re willing to splurge a little, the more expensive rooms offer the best views. Plus, it’s conveniently located near Monterey Bay Aquarium and Fisherman’s Wharf, so you can easily explore on foot.
4. Asilomar Hotel and Conference Grounds
For something a little different, consider staying at the Asilomar Hotel and Conference Grounds. It feels like a nostalgic summer camp, with rooms designed to help you disconnect and unwind, sans TVs. Plus, with the beach just a stone’s throw away, it’s the perfect place for a peaceful retreat.

Perched on the edge of a marine reserve, the Monterey Bay Aquarium offers a fascinating insight into marine life and ocean conservation. It’s a must-visit for all, with interactive exhibits featuring sea otters and an impressive kelp forest.
17-Mile Drive
Enjoy a leisurely drive along the 17-Mile Drive, a scenic route connecting Monterey to Pebble Beach. You’ll be treated to awe-inspiring views of sea cliffs, sandy beaches, and lush forests. Don’t forget to stop at iconic spots like the Lone Cypress and Bird Rock for some photo ops.
